Former Tottenham Hotspur player and TalkSport pundit Jamie O’Hara has urged Antonio Conte to put Djed Spence in the team in the near future.
Spence was one of seven new signings at Tottenham during a busy summer. It took a while to get the deal over the line too, but Spurs eventually sealed a transfer worth a reported £19 million (ESPN).
The youngster has seen very little action for Spurs this season though, with just one appearance as a substitute (Transfermarkt) in the Premier League clash with his former club Nottingham Forest.
Antonio Conte has spoken very openly about the Spence situation, and while he praised the 22-year-old’s work in training, he also claimed the player needed time to adapt to the demands of top-flight football (Football.London).
Conte’s preferred choice in the right wing-back role this season had been Emerson Royal, with the Brazilian starting all but one of Spurs’ fixtures in all competitions (Transfermarkt) before a red card in the North London derby saw him receive a three-match suspension.
For the recent league game against Brighton, Matt Doherty returned to the starting line-up for the first time since picking up an injury at the back end of last season.
Spence, unfortunately, finds himself behind both Emerson and Doherty, as well as Conte having the option to play the likes of Ivan Perisic, Lucas Moura, and Dejan Kulusevski at right wing-back should he choose.
Now though, Jamie O’Hara insists it’s time to give Spence his chance. Speaking to TalkSport, O’Hara said: “Djed Spence, what did we pay for him, £15m? Get him in the team.”
Spurs Web Opinion
While it’s understandable that Conte doesn’t want to rush Spence into action in the Premier League, it’s worth remembering that this lad tore the likes of Leicester City and Arsenal apart in the FA Cup last season while on loan at Nottingham Forest.
With Emerson Royal suspended for two more league games, you’d hope Spence will at least get some game time in one of those matches. Doherty will likely be the first choice, but Spence should be given a chance at least.
