Antonio Conte has hailed Harry Kane for his performance against Eintracht Frankfurt, revealing that the striker’s positioning proved crucial in helping Tottenham hurt their opponents.
Spurs needed all three points in the encounter after being held to a 0-0 draw in Germany last week and they had a poor start, with the away side taking the lead following an unforced error at the back by Eric Dier.
However, it only took six minutes for the Lilywhites to hit back as Kane turned his marker in the middle of the pitch and played a perfect through ball to Son Heung-min, who kept his composure to slide the ball past Kevin Trapp in the Frankfurt goal.
Kane then showed great strength and resilience to win a penalty a few minutes later and stepped up to convert it before Son produced a thumping left-foot volley to give the home side a two-goal cushion heading into the interval.
Despite the England captain missing a penalty in injury time, Conte was quite complimentary about the striker’s display.
When asked about the performance of his front men, the Spurs boss told Football.London: “I think that for us it was really, really important the first leg that we played against Eintracht Frankfurt. In that game, we could win but we didn’t exploit many important situations.
“In this game, we had two days to work and to prepare situations to hurt them and I think the position of Harry was really, really important.
“Today I asked him to stay in a specific position. In my opinion, he played in a really fantastic way and he made our system. He scored and he could have scored the second penalty.
“The combination was good [between him and Son] and Richy was also good with the strikers. I repeat now the game has ended. Now our thoughts have to be for the next game against Everton. It will be difficult, it will be tough.
“We have to recover energy and today I tried to give a bit of rest because we conceded the game close for the result. We have to recover and prepare for the game against Everton well.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It was a clear ploy by Spurs to play the ball early into Kane, who did very well to hold the ball up all game. Son also looked extremely hungry and put in his best performance of the season so far. With Kulusevski also set to return against Everton, things are looking quite rosy at the moment.
