Antonio Conte has revealed that Cristian Romero and Davinson Sanchez could both be used in the central sweeper role if Eric Dier needs to be rotated.
While Conte has rotated his squad a lot more this season, certain outfield positions have remained untouched, including Eric Dier, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, and Harry Kane.
Playing the central sweeper role in a back three is a specialist role that few have experience in, which Conte alluded to in his press conference today. He also hinted that he would continue to use Dier as long as the England man felt fit and comfortable.
However, if there does come a point where Spurs need to make a change, it appears Conte has earmarked Romero and Sanchez as possible replacements in the centre. Both players have predominantly featured at right-centre-back under Conte this season.
Interestingly, Clement Lenglet was not mentioned as an option in the centre alongside the two South Americans.
Conte said (Football London): “There are certain roles that are very difficult to make rotation. The centre back in the middle is very difficult. It’s a specific role.
“I can use Cristian Romero and Sanchez can play there but if I have the possibility to use the player and they give me the availability and they feel comfortable then I will use them.”
Spurs Web Opinion:
I would expect Dier to play every single Premier League match this season unless he picks up a knock. The central sweeper role in a back three doesn’t usually have to cover the most ground, so fatigue shouldn’t play as big a part as some other positions, fingers crossed.
