‘Doesn’t really bother us’ – Son brushes off criticism of Tottenham style
Son Heung-min has insisted that the players are not really affected by what is said in the media about Tottenham’s style of play.
Tottenham have enjoyed a very good start to the season in terms of results, sitting third in the Premier League table with 20 points after nine games.
Despite a couple of bad results in the Champions League, the Lilywhites are also on pace to qualify for the knockout stages, currently sitting at the top of Group D.
However, some pundits continue to question the Lilywhites’ lack of ambition and whether their current run of results is sustainable (talkSPORT).
Son has insisted that he and his teammates are only focused on getting better every game, and are not paying attention to the criticism levelled from the outside.
When asked about the negative things that have been said about Tottenham’s approach this season, the South Korean responded (via Football.London): “No, I think it doesn’t matter.
“I think they criticise because we are almost in a good position in both the league and Champions League as well. I think the criticism is because the expectation is high so I am looking at it that way. Maybe I am too positive? But I think looking that way is good.
“Obviously there will be some improvement and there will be some mistakes. We want to as a group always be better but the criticism doesn’t really bother us to be honest because we only focus on ourselves.”
Despite Tottenham now sitting in a comfortable position in their Champions League group following their win over Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday, Son insisted that the team still has work to do in order to get to the next stage.
He added: “The Champions League is every club’s dream, not only ours. I think everyone is dreaming to play in the Champions League.
“We are top of the group but it doesn’t mean anything at the moment. There will be two massive games, two important games, and we just have to focus.
“In two weeks we have another home game so we can prepare well, we can do everything completely (normally) so it is in our hands. We need to do our best to do what we want to achieve.
“I don’t really focus on any other team and what they are thinking about our team because I am only focused on our team and what we can do better.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I would understand the criticism of Tottenham’s style of play if we were not creating chances or scoring goals but we have clearly shown on multiple occasions this season, including the clashes against Southampton, Fulham and Frankfurt, that we are a formidable attacking force when we are at our best.
