Clement Lenglet thinks Tottenham are in a league of their own in terms of how they play without possession but admitted that they need to improve when they have the ball. He also spoke about the prospect of a permanent move to Spurs.
Tottenham had made their best start to a Premier League season after ten matches ahead of the game against Manchester United but Antonio Conte’s men were brought crashing down to earth at Old Trafford.
The Spurs head coach insisted that the team’s game plan against the Red Devils was the right one and that his side could have hurt United if they had made better use of the ball (Football.London).
That is an opinion that Lenglet also shares, with the defender admitting that the North Londoners need to prove their metal when they come up against big sides.
He told The Guardian: “When you’re on the pitch you have to take risks, to increase your level with the ball.
“Without the ball, we are the best team in terms of effort. We run a lot, we are aggressive, we help our teammates. But we have to improve [with the ball].
“It’s important to say we have made the best [Premier League] start in the history of Tottenham. But we dropped points against three big teams and we struggle against these type of teams. That’s the next step.”
Lenglet is on loan from Barcelona until the end of the season but the Frenchman has insisted that it is too early to think about what will happen next summer.
He added: “It was an amazing experience at Barcelona and it is not finished because I have a contract until 2026. We don’t have an option [to extend at Spurs].
“We have to wait before thinking about this. I have to be good on the pitch, to help the team. Maybe if everything is OK, we will speak but it’s too early.”

Reading between the lines of his comments at the end, it does seem like Lenglet believes that Spurs could sign him permanently next summer if he impresses this season.
While I do expect Tottenham to sign a big name like Bastoni or Gvardiol next summer, perhaps Spurs could decide to sign Lenglet too and potentially move Ben Davies on if the Frenchman outperforms the Wales international this season.
