Football pundit Chris Sutton has lambasted Antonio Conte for his assessment of the Tottenham Hotspur squad and claims the Italian always has an excuse for his team losing games.
Since Conte took over at Tottenham in November 2021, there have been far more positives to shout about than there has negatives. With 30 victories in 52 matches and a win percentage of 57.7% (Transfermarkt), it’s safe to say Conte has done a good job so far.
A strong start to the campaign has seen the club take up third place in the table after 12 games. The North London side are also on the cusp of qualification from their Champions League group.
Back-to-back defeats to Manchester United and Newcastle United have seen Conte and his side come in for some criticism though, with pundits and fans alike somewhat perplexed by the poor performances.
Speaking on the Monday Night Club, Chris Sutton shot down Conte’s comments about his team being ‘scared’ and needing more time, with the manager labelled a ‘whinger’ by the former Chelsea and Blackburn striker.
He said: “Conte said after the Manchester United game ‘his team were a bit scared’. I mean, really? That’s an amazing thing to say.
Sutton wasn’t done there though, adding, “He is a bit of a whinger, like or not, what he has won in the past. There is always an excuse there. He has been in a year and ‘we have only just started’ or something along those lines. Come on! He has been in a year.
“His team have started to take shape. If you ask Spurs fans, they have always demanded a certain brand of football and, at this moment, that brand of football isn’t there, so it’s a concern.
“When they lost the away game (against Sporting) some of Conte’s words after the game, ‘Sporting have been a Champions League team for so many years. We haven’t and we got knocked out in the conference last season’. You are thinking ‘blimey’.
“Talking about budget-wise, Spurs should be getting out of this Champions League group comfortably with the players they have at their disposal. That’s a bit of a cop-out from Conte.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I think you’d be hard-pressed to find a manager at any level who doesn’t have a few excuses up their sleeve for when the going gets tough, but Conte is only speaking the truth.
The Spurs players are afraid of the big games, clearly, and that mentality needs to change – granted, that is Conte’s job to fix that. And again, Conte is right that this squad needs more time and reinforcements to improve and compete at the top.
There’s a difference between whinging, and being honest, and I think Sutton has got the two confused here.
