Lucas Moura has admitted that he found it extremely difficult when he was sidelined with an injury for almost two months.
Moura came on as a substitute in Tottenham’s first two Premier League matches of the season but he subsequently picked up a calf injury, which saw him miss nine matches across all competitions.
The Brazilian returned to action a couple of weeks ago but was only fit enough to make his first start of the season against Sporting Lisbon on Wednesday.
The 30-year-old played 81 minutes before being replaced by his compatriot Emerson Royal as Spurs had to settle for a draw after VAR controversially ruled out Harry Kane’s stoppage time goal for offside.
Moura insisted that Tottenham must focus on the positives and be pleased with their second-half performance.
The winger told Spurs TV after the 1-1 draw: “We need to be happy because of the second half, the spirit was completely different from the first half. We gave everything. I think we must be proud. We could, of course, have won the game, but this is football.
“The first half we didn’t do well, we were very passive, but the second half was completely different. We put up our intensity, we pressed them high and completely controlled the game. It was good. We even missed more opportunities.
“Like I said, this is football. The most important thing is to have in our minds that we gave everything. We must be proud of that, no regrets.”
Moura opened up on the mental challenges he faced due to not being able to play football and admitted that he needs more game time to regain full match fitness.
He added: “It has been a difficult time for me, two months out, not easy. I love playing football, I love playing for Tottenham so, for me, being out has been very, very difficult.
“We know sometimes it happens in our careers and we have to be strong in our minds. Now, I’m happy to be back. I feel good. I’m not 100 per cent, but I’ll reach my best level if I get more game time.”

Moura was a little rusty against Sporting but that is to be expected, given his lack of football this season. Having back is a welcome boost for Conte, particularly with the injuries to both Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison as it gives the Spurs boss the option of using a 3-4-3.
