Antonio Conte has hinted that Cristian Romero may have to be rested against Bournemouth this weekend due to the importance of Marseille away in the Champions League.
The Spurs boss admitted the club took a ‘big, big risk’ starting Romero and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg against Sporting Lisbon on Wednesday, as they had been recovering from injuries.
Conte spoke specifically about Romero and how he was not 100% for the game, and ideally would have been left to recover for a little longer before making the starting XI again.
Tottenham were so close to dreamland in the dying minutes against Sporting as Harry Kane netted a last-minute winner, only to have it chalked off by VAR.
Now Spurs have to avoid defeat away to Marseille to qualify for the knockouts of the Champions League, and Conte has admitted he needs to ‘make the right decision for’ Romero with an ‘important game’ on Tuesday.
He said (Football London): “We have taken a big, big risk for this decision. Especially for Cuti, for Romero. Because he was really tired and we risked him a lot. But you know for this time of game you have to take risks and he can gave us the availability to play.
“Now we have to manage him very well because he played and finished the game with great will & desire. I had to thank him and Pierre.
“I think Cuti needed to recover better but Pierre is OK 100%. Cuti is OK but we have another important game on Tuesday and for this reason we try to make the best decision for him.”
Spurs Web Opinion:
I expect Davinson Sanchez to play against Bournemouth and Romero to be saved for the Marseille match. It just makes sense. There is no point risking him. If Tottenham can’t beat a newly-promoted team, albeit one in good form, without Romero, then it’s their own fault.
