Antonio Conte has revealed that he has spoken to Fabio Paratici and Daniel Levy about the controversial VAR decision that went against Tottenham against Sporting Lisbon on Wednesday.
Spurs thought they had secured all three points when Harry Kane turned the ball home in stoppage time on Wednesday but VAR controversially ruled that the striker was in an offside position when Emerson Royal headed the ball back.
The decision was met with bewilderment and anger by the Spurs players and coaching staff with Conte even being sent off for his protests.
That is not the only refereeing injustice that Lilywhites feel they have been subjected to recently, with referee Jarred Gillett not blowing for a foul when Hugo Lloris was brought down by Callum Wilson in the lead-up to Newcastle’s first goal in their win 2-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.
Conte revealed that he has discussed both decisions with the Spurs hierarchy, insisting that the club cannot stay silent about the errors.
The Tottenham head coach told Football.London: “I spoke with the sporting director and also I sent a message with our owner, Daniel Levy. Also after what happened against Newcastle, we spoke about this, because there is an image very, very clear that it was a foul.
“Sometimes you can accept. And to tell, ‘OK, they made a mistake, we have to move on”. But at the same time, I think that sometimes you had to try to go to speak and to protect your club. I have to protect my club and the club has to protect itself. Because I understood that to be silent is not good.”
Conte made it clear that while he is hesitant to complain about the calls that the referee makes on the pitch, he sees things differently when it comes to decisions made by VAR.
The 53-year-old added: “From the start of the season, I always said I don’t want to comment on the referee decision, I don’t want to comment on the referee decision, I don’t want to comment on the referee decision.
“It happened, a disaster from the start until now between Premier League and the Champions League if I have to mix a referee decision and VAR. What I ask is only to pay a bit of attention and try to understand the same evaluation for every team.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Our performance at Old Trafford was arguably our poorest under Conte but since then, I don’t think we have played as badly as some have made out against either Newcastle or Sporting Lisbon.
We had some very good moments in both games and could have potentially won both had we taken our chances and had refereeing decisions not gone against us. So let us hope our luck turns this afternoon and we get back to winning ways against Bournemouth.
