Tottenham Hotspur earned a hard-fought win against Bournemouth in the Premier League earlier this afternoon, andboss Antonio Conte commented on the importance of putting in good quality crosses throughout the game.
After defeats in the last two league games against Manchester United and Newcastle United, and dire performances on both occasions, Antonio Conte’s men were under pressure to put in a good display against Bournemouth and show what they’re capable of.
That didn’t happen in the first half, as Bournemouth stormed to a 2-0 lead thanks to two goals from striker Kieffer Moore. Thankfully, Spurs improved drastically in the second half and managed to grab a dramatic win through a Rodrigo Bentancur goal in the 92nd minute.
It was a positive performance from Spurs overall, with many aspects of their game leaving fans with something to cheer about. Not only did the Lilywhites register 69% possession (Sky Sports), but the frequency and quality of deliveries into the box was also far better than seen in recent weeks.
Speaking after the game (via Football.London), Spurs boss Antonio Conte explained why this was the case, and what it can lead to when it comes to the Italian’s game plan.
Conte said: “For us it is very important as when you play with three at the back it’s important the quality, important to not only have defenders but also players who are really good with the ball to build up and then become the striker because they have to play and attack and stay.”
“When you start to play with three at the back, when you have the ball we work to stay with the two at the back and go offensive,” he added.
“I think in the second half when we had nothing to lose, we started to do this. My players have to understand we have to do what we try during the training session and not only because we are losing 2-0. We have to attack, we have to attack and not only to defend our goal,” Conte concluded.
Spurs Web Opinion
It was encouraging to see a much more dominant and aggressive Spurs performance in the second half, and the manner in which we put the Bournemouth defence under pressure with constant attacks and balls into the box is sure to have contributed to unsettling the opposition and securing the win.
The issue remains the quality of delivery from the wing-backs, Emerson Royal proves time and time again that he is unable to provide the type of pass for the likes of Harry Kane to feed on.
