Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was the hero for Tottenham Hotspur during their crucial Champions League clash with Marseille last night, but he was very unhappy with the Spurs bench during the first half of the game.
Spurs went into the final group game needing a point to secure their place in the Champions League knockout stages, but an away trip to Marseille proved to be an unnerving experience with the home crowd creating a hostile environment for the North London side.
A first-half goal from Chancel Mbemba put the French club in front and would have put Spurs out of the competition. Thankfully, a headed goal from Clement Lenglet early in the second half saved Spurs from an untimely exit, before Danish midfielder Hojbjerg broke free in injury time and scored the winner.
There was elation all around for the Spurs camp as they topped Group D and face a favourable draw in the next round, but Hojbjerg was not happy with one incident in the first half.
Apparently, the Dane was angry at the Spurs bench for how slowly they prepared a replacement for Heung-min Son, who sustained an eye injury in the first half (Football.London).
According to a report from Football.London, Hojbjerg was fuming that Spurs had to play with ten men for a period before Yves Bissouma eventually replaced Son.
The report said: “Not having a player ready to bring on as Son made way, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was not impressed at all. He made his feelings clear towards the Tottenham bench. Yves Bissouma was introduced about a minute later.”

It was clear almost immediately that Son was not in a good way and would need replacing, so the Spurs bench should really have been prepared to send someone on in his place. Even if the substitute wasn’t necessary in the end, we need to be ready for this kind of situation. Although, I assume if Antonio Conte was on the bench the problem would have been solved a lot quicker so it shouldn’t happen again.
