Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are prepared to back Antonio Conte and give the Italian what he wants in order to get him to commit his future to the club.
Over recent days, there have been mixed reports regarding Conte’s future and whether he is set to sign a new contract at Tottenham.
David Ornstein told NBC Sports on Sunday that Conte’s future is a ‘delicate situation’ and that the Tottenham head coach is ‘very unlikely’ to sign a new deal anytime soon. The journalist explained that the Italian wants to wait and would only make a decision close to the end of the season.
However, The Athletic subsequently revealed on Monday that Daniel Levy had already begun discussions with Conte’s representatives over a new contract.
The report alleged that the Tottenham chairman has a good relationship with the 53-year-old’s entourage, and that the club’s hierarchy are ‘confident’ he will commit his future.
Romano has now explained that although there is no official proposal on the table from Spurs as of yet, the North London club are prepared to do what it takes to hang on to Conte.
The journalist said on the YouTube channel House of Champions: “They (Tottenham) are prepared to back Antonio Conte and basically give him what he wants.
“They are prepared to make this proposal. From what I’m told, to be 100 per cent clear, I was checking today, there is still no proposal on the table.
“Not direct negotiations yet between Conte and Tottenham. They know Antonio. Antonio is now 100 per cent focused on Premier League and Champions League. They are not going to enter into contract talks now.
“There is this World Cup break which is the perfect opportunity to discuss. The official proposal will arrive in November or December and then there will be a negotiation.
“I am told Conte is on a lower salary than he was on at Chelsea and Inter. It’s not about the money. It’s about the project.
“He wants to make sure that Tottenham are going to be ambitious in the next years. It is also about his family, he always decides his future together with them. It will take time, it won’t take one or two weeks.”

Daniel Levy and the Spurs hierarchy know that they have a great head coach on their hands and that they cannot allow him to walk away. However, Conte also knows that he is in a position of power and is thus likely to make significant demands. So, it will be interesting to see how the contract talks play out next month.
