Antonio Conte’s press conferences often offer up interesting quotes to dissect, and Alasdair Gold has given his insight into what he deems ‘thinly-veiled ultimatums’ from the Tottenham Hotspur boss after the defeat to Liverpool at the weekend.
Spurs succumbed to a 2-1 defeat at home to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, with a poor first-half performance proving too much of a mountain to overcome.

The Tottenham players and their manager were met with a chorus of booing at half time, as frustration grows among the fans at the team’s inability to start strong in games.
Speaking after the game, Conte made it known how disappointed he was with the reaction of the fans. Football.London reported Conte’s ‘great respect’ for the fans, but reiterated the need to have patience with the ‘process’ he is working on at the club.
Conte is not one to mince his words, and the Italian manager has been very clear about what he needs to succeed in North London ever since he arrived last November. Upon analysing the post-match comments, Alasdair Gold explained on his YouTube channel what he made of Conte’s speech.
Gold checked with people at the club, and said: “I also listened to his interview after the game, and there are a couple of thinly-veiled ultimatums, threats and hints saying ‘if you don’t want to get behind me, maybe I won’t stick around.’
“I felt that with what he was saying. The half-time boos have become familiar, if Spurs aren’t winning at the break they’re coming.”
Gold then highlighted the crucial part of Conte’s comments: “The key line is ‘if we have the time and the patience and we are all enthusiastic it will be good to continue and do it in the future.’ I’ve checked with a few people at the club, just to check I was reading this right, and they agreed.
“He is suggesting that if the fans back him and his team and give him reason to stick around, he will do so. But if they show him that they don’t want what’s happening he may head off into the sunset.”

It’s not at all surprising that Antonio Conte is getting frustrated by the reception his team are getting at the moment, but I see both sides of it. Conte has been very honest about the need for time and more quality being added to his squad, but at the same time, fans are rightly not enjoying watching those first-half displays.
