Tottenham welcomed Scottish side Motherwell to Hotspur Way this afternoon for a chilly friendly match while the World Cup continues to be played over in Qatar. 

Let’s take a look at how the individual players got on (these ratings are within the context of a friendly match):

Brandon Austin – 5 – Wasn’t really called into action to make any saves and almost conceded by delaying on the ball. His kick deflected off the Motherwell striker and nearly hit the back of the net.

Djed Spence – 8 – Looked to be in the mood down that right side. He ran in behind for fun, linked up well with Kulusevski, and looked a threat in the air at the back post. Should really have picked up a goal or an assist for his work today but very bright signs.

Japhet Tanganga – 6.5 – Nice to see him back on the pitch. He consistently underlapped to create space and options for Spence on the right, even if he seemed to be lacking that match sharpness on the ball. I would like to see him get more minutes as Romero’s understudy this season or go out on loan.

Davinson Sanchez – 6 – Gave the ball away in sloppy fashion a couple of times, but no drama beyond that. It wasn’t exactly a testing day for the Tottenham defensive line.

Charlie Sayers – 6.5 – Certainly didn’t look out of place in the Tottenham line-up and Motherwell had little to no joy down the left side, where Sayers was operating. Comfortable on the ball and solid in defence, albeit without too much to do.

Matt Doherty – 8.5 – Not always easy to play as a wing-back on your weak side, but Doherty was a constant threat. His balls to the back post threatened to get Spence on the scoresheet a couple of times. He also scored two goals of his own, a header from a corner and a finish after cutting in from the left.

Oliver Skipp – 7 – Oliver was not so friendly with some of his challenges today, but in a good way. It seems the only way he knows how to play is by getting stuck in and giving 100%. He turned the ball over a fair few times and showed real composure in possession.

Yves Bissouma – 8 – Really impressed with Yves today. He was at the heart of most positive Tottenham transitions, playing some lovely passes in behind for the likes of Kulusevski. Also looked solid in the tackle and more than comfortable dictating possession.

Harvey White – 7 – Not an easy job for the youngster today but he did very well. Coming in and playing as a false nine was always going to be tricky, but he linked midfield and attack really well. His ball around the corner to create Tottenham’s third goal was even Harry Kane-esque.

Bryan Gil – 7.5 – Gil wasn’t too involved in the general play but he did link up well with Doherty at times on the left when the wing-back overlapped. Assisted Doherty’s goal and then tapped one of his own home. Needs regular game time to reach the next level.

Dejan Kulusevski – 9 – Without Kane and Son, Kulusevski seemed to take it upon himself to run the show. With the number 10 on the back of his shirt, Dejan was at the heart of every good attack. He scored the first goal, helped to create the second, and assisted the third and fourth. Not a bad day!

Substitutes: 

Alfie Whiteman – Made a smart save just after the 70 minute mark. Little else to do.

Romaine Mundle – Came on to play at left-wing-back for the final half an hour.
