Former Inter managing director Ernesto Paolillo expects the Serie A club to cash in on Tottenham target Denzel Dumfries in January as the Dutchman is the player who would be easiest to replace.
Dumfries has blown hot and cold for Inter in the first part of the 2022-23 campaign, with two goals and three assists to his name so far, but the 26-year-old shone at the World Cup for the Netherlands, showcasing his quality in the final third with three goal contributions in Qatar (Transfermarkt).
The 26-year-old has been linked with a move to Tottenham over recent weeks (TuttoSport), with some Italian publications suggesting that Inter are expected to cash in on the former PSV Eindhoven man in January (CalcioMercato).
Spurs are, by no means, the only club credited with an interest in the Dutchman, with Manchester United and Chelsea also thought to be eyeing a move for the wing-back (Rudy Galetti).
Just as they did with Achraf Hakimi in the past, Paolillo believes Inter will opt to sacrifice Dumfries in January in order to raise funds.
When asked if the Netherlands international could leave the San Siro, the former Inter director told TuttoMercatoWeb: “There’s nothing we can do, in the end, the man on the wing always sacrifices himself because, in theory, he’s one of the most easily replaceable.
“However, I remember that because of these policies we have lost Hakimi, who we are seeing at the World Cup as he plays, we have lost Perisic. We risk losing Dumfries.
“If a team wants to compete again for important victories such as the Scudetto, the Champions League, selling the best players is not the best strategy, even if I understand that it is inevitable.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It would be in Inter’s best interest to cash in on Dumfries as the 26-year-old’s value has likely peaked on the back of his displays at the World Cup. Whether or not the Spurs prioritise a move for the Dutchman, I can see Inter targeting Emerson Royal as Dumfries’ replacement.
