According to journalist Dean Jones for GiveMeSport, the injury to Richarlison could see Tottenham Hotspur push forward with plans to sign a new attacker in the January transfer window.
Richarlison scored three goals in Qatar (Transfermarkt), helping Brazil make it to the quarter-finals before crashing out on penalties to Croatia. The 25-year-old returned to Hotspur Way sooner than expected, but not for a particularly positive reason.
It turns out that Richarlison had picked up a hamstring injury while on international duty and was having scans to assess the damage. It has since been revealed by Football.London that the Brazil star will be out for a period of five to six weeks.
Naturally, that’s very disappointing news for Antonio Conte and Tottenham Hotspur, who spent £60 million to bring Richarlison to the club during the summer (Sky Sports).
It was hoped that he would return from the World Cup and carry his international form into the second half of the season for Spurs.
Richarlison had contributed two goals and three assists in all competitions (Transfermarkt) before the domestic campaign paused for the World Cup.
With the season set to resume on Boxing Day, Spurs will need all hands on deck to ensure another top-four finish, so the absence of Richarlison will surely be felt.
There could be a silver lining of sorts though, according to Dean Jones, who thinks this latest injury will force Tottenham’s hand and see them sign a new attacker in the upcoming January transfer window.
Jones said: “It might accelerate that need for one more attack-minded player. That’s what I’m told we really need to look out for now.”
Spurs Web Opinion
We know how risk-averse the club usually is, so I cannot see them spending money on a replacement for a player we just signed in the summer for the sake of what will ultimately be a four-week period. That said, we have been looking at attackers anyway, so if a deal can be struck for an existing target at the right price, there’s every chance they will pull the trigger regardless of Richarlison’s absence.
