Fabrizio Romano has revealed that the race for Tottenham target Piero Hincapie is heating up ahead of the January transfer window.
Hincapie has been one of the standout defenders across the Bundesliga since his move to Germany 18 months ago and his list of admirers has seemingly grown as a result of his displays for Ecuador at the World Cup.
The Daily Express revealed last month that Tottenham have sent scouts to watch the Bayer Leverkusen man in action in Qatar and could be readying an offer for the centre-back in January.
Sky Sports’ Dharmesh Sheth then reported on Sunday that Antonio Conte’s men could face competition from Chelsea for the 20-year-old, with Graham Potter’s men alleged to have identified the Leverkusen star as an alternative to RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvaridol.
He added that the Bundesliga club valued Hincapie at around €30m (£26.2m) ahead of the January transfer window.
Romano has now revealed that it is not just Spurs and Chelsea who have watched the Ecuadorian but also Inter, Napoli and some La Liga clubs.
The journalist told CaughtOffside: “Piero Hincapie has been scouted by many important clubs including Chelsea, Inter, Napoli, Tottenham and Spanish clubs too.
“But it’s about scouting and following the player, there’s nothing advanced about negotiations at this stage. He’s a very good, interesting centre-back and he has a chance to move in 2023.”
Spurs Web Opinion
A left-sided centre-back will not be a priority for Tottenham in January. I suspect Spurs view the likes of Hincapie, Evan Ndicka and Alessandro Bastoni as potential options for next summer. The Josko Gvardiol deal clearly seems to be beyond us as his price would have skyrocketed after the World Cup.
