Fabrizio Romano has said that he was surprised to read reports of Arsenal entering the race for Tottenham target Nicolo Zaniolo, explaining that there have been no talks between the Gunners and the AS Roma star.
Zaniolo was heavily linked with a move to Tottenham back in the summer, and in the end, it emerged that the transfer fell through because the two clubs could not agree on the structure of the deal (Gianluca Di Marzio – Wettfreunde).
It remains to be seen whether Spurs will reignite their interest in the Italian in January but Gazzetta dello Sport revealed at the start of this month that the 23-year-old’s future at the Stadio Olimpico is in doubt and the winger could listen to other offers if the Giallorossi do not offer him a new deal soon.
In what came as a big twist in the saga, Radio Radio reported last week that Arsenal could make an offer of around £22m for Zaniolo when the transfer window opens in January.
However, Romano has now played down the Gunners’ interest in the Roma star and added that even Spurs have not made a concrete approach for the Italy international.
The journalist told CaughtOffside: “I’m aware there’s been some speculation about Nicolo Zaniolo again, and it’s a slightly surprising story as there are no negotiations between Arsenal and Zaniolo as of now.
“He has never been close to a Premier League move. Tottenham links were there in the past because of Fabio Paratici who’s always been following Zaniolo since the beginning of his career, but nothing more concrete than that.”

Zaniolo only has 18 months left on his contract and so January could be the last window where Roma can get a decent fee for the winger. So, if Jose Mourinho’s men do not think the 23-year-old will sign a new deal, they will likely be willing to listen to any offers that come their way next month.
