Opinion: Tottenham player ratings from the 2-2 draw with Brentford

Tottenham Hotspur were back in Premier League action this afternoon, coming from behind to earn a 2-2 draw away to Brentford after the World Cup break.

Let’s take a look at how the individual players got on:

Fraser Forster – 6 – Looked a little shaky at times but made some decent saves and claims across the 90 minutes. Nowhere near as mobile as Hugo Lloris, which stood out, but he did well.

Matt Doherty – 7 – Tottenham were much better down the right than the left today, and Doherty was a part of that. Quiet in the first 45 but linked up well with Kulusevski in the second half and looked a threat at the back post. Involved in the build-up to the equaliser.

Japhet Tanganga – 3 – A bit of a horror show from Tanganga today. Seemed way too eager to win the ball every time, meaning he gave away foul after foul. With such little game time, he was also very sloppy on the ball.

Eric Dier – 4 – Far from Dier’s best performance. Stood off his man and allowed the cross for the first goal, then somehow sliced the ball out of play for a corner in the build-up to the second.

Clement Lenglet – 6 – Tottenham’s best defender today, although the bar was set very low. Off the ball, he left a bit to be desired with his marking and positioning. On the ball, he was calm and composed, and even came up with the assist for Kane’s goal.

Ivan Perisic – 7 – Very quiet in the first half and I feared the World Cup had fatigued him too much, but Perisic was class in the second 45. He put in so many dangerous crosses and had the constant beating of the defenders. Huge respect for making himself fit and available for today.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – 7 – All over the place with his passing in the first half and without his usual buddy Bentancur, but Hojbjerg upped his game in the second half and dictated the game at times. A lovely finish for the equaliser in what has become a high-scoring season for Pierre.

Yves Bissouma – 5.5 – A tale of two halves for Bissouma. In the first half, he was a 3, giving the ball away far too often in dangerous areas. In the second half, he turned over possession well for Spurs and was a real driving force. One of his first games in a midfield two for Spurs.

Dejan Kulusevski – 7 – I have to say, even though he played very well, I expected even more from Dejan today as he missed the World Cup. Having said that, he really grew into the match and assisted Hojbjerg’s equaliser. More to come as he gets match sharp, you would assume.

Harry Kane – 7.5 – Deserved to score the winner after the few weeks he’s had. Kane scored a fantastic header to get Spurs back into the game, then hit the bar at 2-2. He found a nice balance of dropping to create and staying up top in the second half.

Heung-min Son – 7 – One of the few players to impress in the first 45, Sonny actually picked the ball up a few times and drove past people, which we haven’t seen much this season. Fell away from the game at times in the second half, but a positive performance.

Substitutes: 

Davinson Sanchez – 7 – Actually played extremely well after coming off the bench, both on and off the ball. Won a fair few tackles, used possession well, and even volleyed that fierce effort on target.
