Antonio Conte has remarked that the impatience of the Tottenham home crowd on Sunday made it difficult for his players but the Spurs boss refused to use that as an excuse for the 2-0 defeat.
Neither side offered much going forward in the first 20 minutes of the game but Tottenham did take control of proceedings after that and were a bit unlucky to go into the break without the lead after Ashley Young cleared Harry Kane’s header off the line.

Spurs started the second half on the front foot but conceded first yet again owing to an individual mistake. It was not any of the defenders at fault this time but rather Hugo Lloris, who spilt Douglas Luiz’s long-range effort, allowing Aston Villa to capitalise.
As one would expect, the home crowd grew quite impatient after that, with ‘oohs and aahs’ ringing around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium every time any Spurs player misplaced a pass.
Villa scored their second goal on the counter-attack in the 73 minutes to give themselves a cushion, which only made the atmosphere at the ground even more hostile.
When asked if the atmosphere affected the players, Conte told Football.London after the 2-0 loss: “Yeah but I understand. At the same time, I think that the players can feel a warm atmosphere. For sure, I was a player and I understand when the atmosphere become warm and impatient know?
“At the same time we have to be good to improve in every aspect because good players live with every atmosphere positive or negative and then we face in the best possible way. But I repeat I wasn’t angry with the players because I think we gave everything today. All the players.”

The Tottenham home crowd is extremely demanding, and while one can understand the frustration of the home fans, it would serve the team better if they got behind the players when we were a goal down rather than getting on their backs.
That is particularly true for a game like the one on Sunday where our performance was not too bad, and Villa’s first goal came against the run of play.
