Alasdair Gold has backed Antonio Conte to remain at Tottenham at least until the end of the season and revealed that the North London hierarchy are split over the prospect of rehiring Mauricio Pochettino.

Multiple publications (Daily Mail and Evening Standard) have reported over the last week and a half that Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel are at the top of Spurs’ wishlist if the club do part ways with Conte over the coming weeks or months.

TuttoMercatoWeb even claimed on Sunday that the Lilywhites had already made direct contact with Pochettino’s camp over returning to the club.

However, Spurs’ hard-fought win over Fulham on Monday night took some pressure off Conte, who remarked after the game that he is ‘proud to be Tottenham manager’ (Daily Mail).

Gold has now said that barring something drastic over the coming weeks, the Italian will stay at Spurs until the end of the season. The journalist also revealed that not everyone in the club’s hierarchy would be on board with the idea of bringing Pochettino back to the club.

When asked about the 50-year-old replacing Conte at the helm, Gold said in a Q&A on Football.London: “I think it’s still too early to think about other managers.

“Unless there’s a huge fall-out between Conte and Levy or the points suddenly dry up during what is a decent run of fixtures after the City game, I can’t see why a decision would be made before the end of the season.

“As for Mauricio Pochettino returning if Conte were to leave, it would be a move that would go down well with the fans who felt he was never truly backed while the Argentine has said himself that he has unfinished business at Spurs.

“It would be interesting certainly at a boardroom level because from what I understand it would be a move that certainly split the Tottenham hierarchy.”

Spurs Web Opinion

While Conte seems likely to stay at Spurs until the end of the season, all indications for the moment seem to be that the Italian is not likely to continue in the job any longer, perhaps partly for personal reasons.

I would be quite surprised if Levy does not turn to Pochettino in the summer, especially now that Paratici’s future at the club also looks in doubt after Juventus’ capital gains verdict.
