Alasdair Gold has revealed that Antonio Conte was impressed with Ryan Mason the first time he saw the 31-year-old take charge of a training session after the Italian had just been appointed as Tottenham’s head coach.
Mason, who served as the interim head coach towards the end of the 2020/21 campaign after Jose Mourinho’s sacking, has evolved into an important part of Conte’s backroom staff since the 53-year-old arrived at the North London club over 15 months ago.
The former Spurs midfielder and assistant head coach Cristian Stellini were tasked with overseeing preparations for Spurs’ clash against Manchester City last Sunday after Conte underwent surgery to remove his gallbladder.
Both Stellini and Mason were seen bellowing instructions to the players through the 90 minutes, with the home side coming away with an impressive 1-0 win.
Gold has now explained why Conte decided to welcome Mason into his coaching staff after he first took charge of the club.
The journalist said on his YouTube channel: “Conte wasn’t technically allowed to take training (in his first day at Hotspur Way) because his work permit hadn’t arrived.
“Mason took the sessions and Conte was a bit like okay, this lad’s got something. That’s why you saw him become a real trusted member of the staff.”

Working with a coach as experienced and tactically astute as Antonio Conte will do wonders for Mason’s development. At 31 years of age, he is still extremely young for a coach and could potentially develop into a very good manager in the future, whether that be at Spurs or elsewhere.
