Football pundit Garth Crooks has told BBC Sport that Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers would be a good fit for Tottenham Hotspur should Antonio Conte leave the club at the end of the season.
Conte arrived at Tottenham in November 2021 and totally transformed the North London side’s fortunes last season, taking them from mid-table to a top-four finish.
There were high hopes for the current campaign, with new additions to the squad and Champions League football to look forward to. Unfortunately, things haven’t quite gone to plan for Spurs and Conte this year.
While the Lilywhites are currently in fifth place in the Premier League table, a 4-1 defeat to Leicester City on Saturday was emblematic of Tottenham’s inconsistent form this season and has left the club to rue the missed opportunity of gaining on the top four.
On top of this, there are still doubts as to whether Conte’s long-term future lies with Tottenham (Daily Mail), but Crooks believes the perfect replacement is the man who just beat Spurs.
He said: “A few weeks ago, Leicester were struggling but they weren’t panicking. I was particularly struck by the relaxed nature of manager Brendan Rodgers in his post-match interviews, which is always a good sign that managers are in control of the situation.”
“Rodgers is a good coach and there is no doubt he seems to have got Iheanacho back to his best again. We know the Nigeria international can score goals but he is at his best when his touch is good, he sees the pass and is generally wreaking havoc in opposition defences.
“And that is precisely what he did against Tottenham. If Conte were to leave Spurs at the end of the season, they could do much worse than installing Rodgers at the helm in his place.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Brendan Rodgers is a funny one, because he does seem to have bad spells but always seems to pull himself out of them.
I don’t know what the future holds for Tottenham and Conte, and I’m not even sure what I want to see happen now, but I wouldn’t be totally against Rodgers coming in if Conte were to leave.
