Alan Shearer has said that Harry Kane will not be bothered if he does not win trophies, given the multitude of records that the Tottenham man will break before he hangs up his boots.
Looking at Kane’s numbers, it is indisputable that he has been one of the best strikers in Premier League history if not the very best.
The 29-year-old wrote his name into the history books last week by becoming Tottenham’s highest scorer while also being just the third player, after Shearer and Wayne Rooney, to score 200 times in the Premier League.
However, some opposition fans still question Kane’s legacy since he has not yet got his hands on a major trophy.
Last week, Newcastle striker Callum Wilson dismissed those suggestions on the Footballer’s Football Podcast, remarking that the England captain will undoubtedly go down as a legend of the game, given the ridiculous numbers that he has posted.
Shearer has now come to Kane’s defence, insisting that finishing as the top scorer in Premier League history and having a statue at Tottenham, would be more valuable for the striker than winning a trophy.
The pundit said on BBC Radio 5 Live: “There is not one minute of any day I look back at my career and say I wish had gone to Manchester United because I would have won medals.
“Harry has the Tottenham record and will have a statue, will get the England record and probably a statue at Wembley and a good chance the Premier League record. They are his medals.
“I can see why he would take the decision to stay at Tottenham. He already has greatness around him and if he doesn’t win a trophy I don’t think will bother him at all.
“He is the only one who can answer it, if he can say ‘I’m the happiest guy alive, I have all the records, I might not have a trophy, but I’m happy’.”
Spurs Web Opinion
The trophy argument is nothing more than an attempt by opposition fans to discredit Kane. It has always been a completely illogical argument as there are loads of players who win trophies who hardly have any legacies in the game.
Would any Spurs fan really value the contributions of Alan Hutton, Teemu Tainio or Young Pyo-Lee more than Kane because they lifted the Carabao Cup at the club? It is a laughable assertion when one considers it.
It is also ridiculous to say that a striker who will finish his career as England’s highest goalscorer and the top scorer in Premier League history, will not be remembered.
Opposition fans who do not like Kane and Spurs are grasping at straws when they make these claims and going by how incessantly they try to discredit every single one of Kane’s achievements, they are seemingly more bothered by his legacy than Tottenham fans are.
