Antonio Conte has admitted that he found it extremely difficult to be away from the team ahead of the clash against Manchester City after having surgery to remove his gallbladder.
Conte had been suffering from abdominal pains and the club announced two weeks ago that the Italian would be heading to his homeland for surgery after he was diagnosed with cholecystitis.
As he was recovering from the operation, the 53-year-old was not at Hotspur Way to prepare the team for the clash against City and had to watch the game from Italy, with Cristian Stellini spearheading preparations along with Ryan Mason and the rest of the coaching staff.
Conte would have hoped for a gentle return to proceedings when he arrived back at Hotspur Way last week but it did not work out that way, with the Lilywhites being thrashed 4-1 by Leicester City on Saturday.
In his first press conference in a couple of weeks, the Tottenham head coach admitted on Monday that he was feeling much better even though he is not yet 100 per cent.
Conte told Football.London: “For sure, it was really difficult to stay far from the team. Because you have a sense of responsibility that you want to stay every moment with your players, to breathe the environment in every situation.
“But this problem happened and now I’m feeling much better than before. I’m not still 100 per cent but I think I’m recovering well, it’s very important for me to stay with the team, work with them and try to stay together in a difficult moment for us.
“Because in the last period we were not so lucky, because three surgeries – me and two surgery for the players. In the last seven days we had four serious injuries.
“For this season I think to stay together is very important and try in this type of situation to create the right spirit, to help each other much more than before to work together and overcome this difficult period.
“As I said before, it was really painful to stay far away. To live the situation. In a way, this was the first time for me to stay far from the team.
“It happened in the past that I was banned and I had to watch the game (in the stands) but to stay so far was the first time and really painful.”
Spurs Web Opinion
If the issue forced a dedicated workaholic like Conte to stay away from the club for a week, there is no doubt that it would have been extremely painful. Let us hope the players can give the Italian something to smile about by getting back to winning ways.
