Jamie O’Hara has claimed that Antonio Conte should leave his role as Tottenham Hotspur head coach if he continues to persist with his preferred 3-4-3 formation.
The 3-4-3 has been Conte’s go-to system from the day he walked into Tottenham, with the Italian only occasionally shifting to a 3-5-2 on rare occasions.
Spurs have become extremely porous defensively over the last few months, with the Lilywhites now having conceded the most goals of any team in the top half of the Premier League table so far this season.
The Lilywhites will now have to cope without a number of their key players, with Yves Bissouma, Rodrigo Bentancur, Ryan Sessegnon and Hugo Lloris out with medium to long-term injuries.
It has been confirmed that Bentancur will not kick a ball again this season after rupturing his ACL, and O’Hara believes that it will be madness for Conte to continue playing with just two central midfielders without the Uruguayan in the side.
The former Tottenham midfielder told talkSPORT: “If anyone at Tottenham is listening, you have got to change the formation now. You cannot play two in midfield, you cannot play 3-4-3 without Bentancur. You have to play three in midfield.”
His co-host Jason Cundy intervened to suggest: “He (Conte) won’t change”, to which O’Hara responded: “Well then he should go, then he should go.
“Because honestly, I don’t even enjoy watching Tottenham anymore, I don’t enjoy watching it. I used to get so passionate, so into watching Spurs play.
“And now I’m looking and watching going ‘I’m not enjoying this’. It’s not enjoyable to watch. We never have the ball, when we have the ball we’ve got no creativity. We’re awful at the back.”
Spurs Web Opinion
For all the tactical acumen that Conte has, the one thing we know about the Italian is that he is not flexible with respect to his set-up. He does not move away from his tried and tested approach, which is not necessarily a criticism.
In fact, the likes of Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp are exactly the same. However, it is legitimate to ask questions about Conte’s tactics when things are not working.
I do not agree with a section of the Spurs fan base who have convinced themselves that Conte can do no wrong and that only the players and the owners can be blamed when results do not go our way.
