Fabrizio Romano claims Tottenham Hotspur are among a number of clubs interested in signing Piero Hincapie, despite the defender agreeing to a new contract with Bayer Leverkusen.
The German club announced recently that the young defender had put pen to paper on a new deal which will run until 2027, an extension on his previous contract which would expire in 2026.
Hincapie himself described Leverkusen as ‘exactly the right club’ for him, and suggests this new contract is ‘great motivation’ as he looks to the future and hopes to win titles with Bayer Leverkusen.
It is thought Tottenham made a bid for Hincapie in the January transfer window but were knocked back by the Bundesliga side (BILD). According to Football.London, the Ecuador international is high on the list of transfer targets for Spurs come the summer, too.
The fact the 21-year-old has signed this new contract will have been a blow to Tottenham’s hopes of securing his signature for themselves. The even bigger blow is the fact that his new deal does not include a buyout clause, Fabrizio Romano reports.
He tweeted: “Understand there’s no release clause included in Piero Hincapié new contract with Bayer Leverkusen.”
On Tottenham’s interest, Romano added: “Many clubs remain keen on signing the Ecuadorian CB in the summer including Tottenham — but Bayer Leverkusen will decide the price, no buy-out clause.”

Spurs Web Opinion
While this situation is not ideal, it actually changes very little. Hincapie was already tied to a decent contract anyway, so the extra year shouldn’t do much to deter Spurs.
As for the buyout clause, we are likely going to have to pay a premium price anyway for such a young and talented defender.
Sometimes, when a player has a release clause, it can make their club more stubborn as we saw with Pedro Porro, so without one there may be more room for negotiation.
