Manchester United legend Andy Cole has claimed that Erik Ten Hag’s job at Old Trafford has been made easier by the fact that the likes of Tottenham have been ‘terrible’ this season.
After Spurs secured a top-four finish last season and strengthened their squad significantly during last summer’s transfer window, many would have expected the Lilywhites to push on and be the closest challengers to Manchester City and Liverpool.
However, Antonio Conte’s men have fallen well below expectations and look like they are set for another battle to qualify for the Champions League.
Tottenham are, by no means, the only big club to underperform this season, with Liverpool currently sitting in sixth place in the table while Chelsea are languishing in tenth place.
After Ten Hag guided Man Utd to their first trophy in six years on Sunday, Cole has suggested that the Dutchman would have found his campaign in England to be a lot more challenging if the likes of Spurs and Liverpool had lived up to expectations.
The 51-year-old told Best Sports Betting Canada (as relayed by The Metro): “Erik Ten Hag has come in and done a fantastic job, but I would not get carried away.
“You look at Liverpool and Tottenham who have been terrible this season, Manchester City have not been themselves, Arsenal have been okay, if these teams really turned up, what would the league table really look like?”

I think the one factor that many pundits and fans are ignoring this season is that the Premier League, as an entity, has become a lot more competitive this season, with all teams capable of beating each other.
It is unlikely that the title winner is going to take 90 points this season while it is also looking likely that teams have to get over 40 points to stay up, which is significantly more than the last two seasons.
Part of the reason that clubs lower down the ladder have gotten a lot stronger is due to the financial differential between the Premier League and the other leagues post-Covid, which has led to a huge talent drain from Italy, Germany, Spain and France, and into England.
