Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor has told GiveMeSport that he thinks Richarlison may have been signed as the long-term successor to Harry Kane amid uncertainty over the latter’s future at Tottenham Hotspur.
Kane has long been Tottenham’s key attacking player and main source of goals. With 268 goals, Kane is now the club’s all-time leading goalscorer, having surpassed Jimmy Greaves’ long-standing record this year (GOAL).
It’s safe to say Kane is a club legend in North London, and is the most important and valuable player in the Tottenham squad.
But a big question mark remains over just how long Kane will stay with Spurs.
With Spurs fighting to claim a top-four place in the Premier League this year, there are growing fears that Kane will look to leave the club in the summer.
He has been linked with both Manchester United and Bayern Munich of late (Telegraph).
Kane has just 16 months left on his current contract and it remains to be seen whether a new deal will be agreed.
Spurs signed Richarlison from Everton in the summer, in a deal reported to be worth up to £60 million (Sky Sports).
It was initially thought the signing would provide competition in attacking areas for the club, but now Taylor posits the Brazilian may have been a contingency plan in case Kane does move on.
He said: “Richarlison is not a winger. He plays in the centre, as we saw with Brazil.
“I say this speculatively but you do wonder whether Richarlison was a player signed with the mindset that [Spurs] couldn’t guarantee Kane will stay long-term.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I definitely think Richarlison plays better when he is playing through the middle rather than out wide, and he’s proven that time and time again with Brazil.
If Kane does leave, I think Richarlison would do a good job as our main central striker, but we would still need to sign more attacking players to compensate for losing Kane.
