Football. London have put forward a nightmare scenario for Tottenham, where the North London club could miss out on next season’s Champions League even if they finish in fourth place.
Irrespective of whether Antonio Conte is sacked or not, Spurs have their work cut out to finish in the top four after their 3-3 draw against Southampton, with both Newcastle and Liverpool hot on their heels.
The Magpies sit two points below the Lilywhites in the table, while the Reds are seven points behind but both clubs have two games in hand over Tottenham.
In fact, Opta (as relayed by Sky Sports) give Spurs just a 23.9 per cent chance of finishing fourth this season, with the data analytics platform predicting Conte’s men to finish sixth in the table.
Football.London have now explained that Tottenham could miss out on the Champions League even if they finish in fourth place.
This is because UEFA rules state that only a maximum of five clubs from England can compete in next year’s Champions League.
So, if Manchester United were to slip out of the top four but were to be crowned European champions while another English club also wins the Europa League, that means the team that finishes fourth will not have a place in Europe’s premier club tournament next season.
Spurs Web Opinion
This is not a scenario that Tottenham would have to worry about as Man Utd are not likely to fall out of the top four.
I expect the Spurs hierarchy to act swiftly to dismiss Conte as I believe that will give us a much better chance of finishing fourth this season.
