Alasdair Gold revealed that while Tottenham have seriously considered appointing Marcelo Gallardo in the past, the Argentine is not one of the leading contenders to replace Antonio Conte right now.
Gallardo has had tremendous success in his eight-year spell at River Plate, which came to an end last year.
He guided the Argentine giants to two Copa Libertadores titles, three Copa Argentina trophies as well as the league title in 2021.
The Buenos Aires giants played aggressive, eye-catching football under the 47-year-old, which is why he has been touted for some of the biggest jobs in Europe.
In fact, Fabrizio Romano revealed on his Twitch channel back in 2021 that Gallardo was one of the names that Tottenham considered before they hired Nuno Espirito Santo.
Gold has now confirmed that the Argentine manager was indeed on Spurs’ wishlist when they were on the lookout for Jose Mourinho’s replacement but revealed that the former River Plate boss is now an ‘outlier’ for the position.
The journalist said in a Q&A on Football.London: “I wouldn’t rule out Marcelo Gallardo entirely but I think he’d be an outlier in the running.
“For one reason or another, he hasn’t been linked with a move to the Premier League too much, or at least he wasn’t until there was some suggestions from Brazil about him being a potential Chelsea candidate.
“I think he’s one Spurs have definitely looked at but I don’t get the impression he’s a leading candidate at this stage.
“As with Nuno in 2021 though, who knows what can happen to the order of candidates as others fall away.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Gallardo’s stock was far higher a couple of years ago than it is now.
So, if Spurs chose against hiring the Argentine back in 2021 in favour of a move for Nuno, the North Londoners certainly are not going to consider him for the position now.
