Genk chairman Peter Croonen is confident that the club’s director of football, Dimitri De Conde, who is rumoured to be on Tottenham’s radar, will stay put at the Belgian side.
With Tottenham having appointed Ange Postecoglou as their new head coach 72 days after Antonio Conte’s sacking, the clubs’ next order of business might be to fill the vacancy left by Fabio Paratici’s departure.
De Conde was thought to be one of the names on Tottenham’s wishlist, with Het Nieuwsbald reporting two weeks ago that the North Londoners were following the 48-year-old closely.
De Conde joined Genk as a youth coach before being promoted to the post of technical director back in 2015, a role he has held ever since.
Over the last fear years, he has developed a reputation as a gem-finder, helping Genk to snap up several top young players who the club have subsequently sold on for substantial profits.
Croonen has now insisted that despite De Conde attracting interest from some big teams, he remains committed to the club.
De Conde not likely to join Tottenham this summer
When asked about the speculation over his director of football’s future, the Genk chairman told TVL’s Sportcafe (as relayed by Voetbal Primeur): “Dimitri is an exceptional talent in very many ways. But he is fortunately also a real Genkie.
“He lives and breathes here. He is also very grateful to the club for the opportunities he has been given, but above all he has fulfilled them cleverly and strongly himself.
“He is someone who will always generate interest. Whether he has declared his long-term commitment? Yes anyway. He is someone who is keen to continue with us. But also, someone we must continue to watch over his position.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I am quite surprised that Tottenham do not yet appear close to appointing a sporting director.
The club seem to be pushing ahead with their summer recruitment plans without filling the vacancy.
That perhaps suggests that they value Postecoglou’s expertise in the market and trust the new head coach to work with the recruitment team to finalise the transfer targets.
