Pundit suggests Postecoglou might prefer to cash in on first-team Spurs star
Simon Jordan has said that Ange Postecoglou might not be too disappointed if Tottenham cash in on Harry Kane as the 29-year-old is not a natural fit for the Australian’s style of play.
Bayern’s opening offer of £60m plus add-ons for Kane was rejected last week (Sky Sports) but multiple outlets have since claimed that Thomas Tuchel’s men are prepared to test Tottenham’s resolve with an improved offer (Evening Standard).
Ben Jacobs claimed a couple of days ago that the Bundesliga giants are expected to submit an offer of £80m for the Tottenham man but he added that the North London club are relaxed about the situation.
The journalist explained that Ange Postecolgou is expected to stress to the England captain over the coming days that he is an important part of his plans for the upcoming season.
Postecoglou might prefer the cash over Harry Kane
Jordan has now opined that an offer of £80m would seriously test Daniel Levy’s resolve, insisting that the Tottenham chairman would not want the striker to walk away on a free transfer next summer.
The former Crystal Palace owner told talkSPORT: “I think £60m starts a conversation. Because they’ve got a year to go, unless they’re going to get Harry to sign a new deal with them, which I doubt.
“I can’t see Daniel [Levy] letting this go to be a free transfer next year, so one of two things has to happen. He has to sell him or he has to get him to sign a new contract. I’m down the middle with it.
“But I think if Bayern Munich were to go up to £80m you’d really test the resolve of Daniel Levy. I think this might come down to Ange Postecoglou.”
Jordan further suggested that Postecoglou might even prefer to have £80m to spend rather than to keep Kane, but he questioned whether the 29-year-old would be keen on a move to Germany.
He added: “I think he (Postecoglou) will be relaxed about the situation if he’s going to get all of that money back as an investment into the squad.
“Because maybe – with all due respect to Harry and how brilliant a player as he is – he might not play the way Postecoglou wants Tottenham to play.
“The fascinating part of this equation will be whether Harry Kane wants to play in Germany at this stage of his career.
“Does he want to uproot a young family and all that goes with that and go and play in Germany? It’s one thing going to play in Spain for Real Madrid and Barcelona, it’s another thing going to play in Germany for Bayern Munich. I don’t know, I’m not sure about it.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It is pretty clear by now that Kane is willing to join Bayern if the two clubs can agree on a fee as the Bundesliga club would not be making offers before speaking to the striker’s entourage.
I do think Postecoglou would have planned for next season with Kane in the team but Jordan is right when he says that the 29-year-old is not an ideal fit for the Australian’s team as pressing is not his biggest strength.
I believe that the sensible thing for Spurs to do would be to sell the England captain to Bayern and use the funds to rebuild the squad to better suit Postecoglou’s preferred style.
