Ange Postecoglou has revealed he believes that his preferred aggressive, front-foot, style of football is one which gives his side the best chance of winning trophies.
There has been a lot made out of the brand of entertaining football that Postecoglou‘s sides play, with his Celtic team catching people’s eye with their enterprising and relentless approach during his two-year stint north of the border.
However, it is worth noting that the Australian is also very much a winner, having tasted success in every job that he has taken on in his managerial career.
Doing so at Tottenham would undoubtedly be his biggest challenge, particularly given the quality of teams and managerial minds that he will come up against in the Premier League.
Postecoglou made it clear that he is setting his aims high ahead of his first season in charge at N17 and that the processes he wants to put in place are geared toward achieving success.

Postecoglou has a winning belief
When asked about Tottenham’s objectives for the upcoming season, the new Spurs boss told Football.London: “I’m not going to try and limit us to when. All I know is I love winning. I don’t do any job unless I think I can win. That’s going to be my intent. I also have a real strong belief in the way that should happen – the way we play, the way we train, the way we behave, all those things.
“This strong desire to win exists in everybody. There isn’t a club in the world that doesn’t want to win. That’s not going to make you any different from your opponent on a weekly basis. The really successful teams, that’s underpinned by something stronger, something in that organisation that makes them winners beyond just wanting to win.
“You can’t just say we’re desperate to win. It’s the what’s going to get you there, that’s where I come in because I believe the football we will play and the way we go about it will give us an opportunity to do that and that’s what I’m going to focus on.
“Play the way we want. Train the way we want. Get the players in we need, the people in we need to get us there. That will give us the opportunity to have that success. Just wanting to win is not enough in anything.”
Postecoglou arguably has the deck stacked against him, with the Lilywhites not tasted any silverware since 2008 and with many high-profile managers failing to deliver that elusive trophy over recent years.
The 57-year-old is certainly under no illusion about the difficulty of the task that lies ahead.
He continued: “I don’t think there’s a shortcut to success. I doubt Antonio [Conte] or Jose [Mourinho] would say that. All of the success they’ve had is hard-earned. If people think it’s just a matter of plugging in something special and it happens, that’s not how it works.
“In terms of me, I’ve got this process that I go through with every club I’ve been at and it will start with the way we play. That’s everything. That’s where we go with the belief that you can do something. It’s going to have a basis in something. It can’t just be: we want to win. We need one more player or one manager to be a winner. I don’t believe in that.
“You have to have something more substantial to fall back on and that’s what I do because it’s quite obvious that there won’t be many on this planet that think just bringing me in will bring us success. What is going to bring us success is building some strong foundations in how we want to play.”

Some managers hide behind their preference for ‘an attacking philosophy and use it as an excuse for not delivering trophies or success. Postecoglou clearly does not want to fall into the trap, with the new head coach making it clear that the objective of his intended style of football is to deliver success.
