Ange Postecoglou has admitted that he wants to strengthen at centre-back and revealed that Tottenham re looking to add reinforcements to the backline as ‘quickly as possible’.
So far this window, Tottenham have made Dejan Kulusevski and Pedro Porro’s respective loan moves permanent and have also landed Guglielmo Vicario, James Maddison and Manor Solomon.
However, the one priority position that the Lilywhites are yet to address, much to the frustration of some Spurs fans, is centre-back.
The likes of Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Taposoba and Wolfsburg’s Micky van de Ven continue to be heavily linked with a move to N17 (GiveMeSport) but there is no indication at the moment that either one is imminently going to join.
Postecoglou admits he wants a new central defender
Postecoglou has now confirmed that centre-back is one of the positions he had identified as a priority to strengthen when he first took over at Spurs.
When asked if the central defenders are likely to come through the door, the Australian told Football.London: “Yeah, I think that’s definitely our intention, absolutely. We’ve been working on it for a while and we’ll definitely try to get it done as quickly as possible.
“Some of it (areas which needed to be strengthened), I had identified early on. I don’t think it’s any secret about some of the areas we needed to strengthen. The goalkeeper was one and central defence is another.”
Postecoglou also has some big decisions to make regarding who to keep and who to offload, with a squad of 31 players travelling on a pre-season tour. The 57-year-old admitted that the squad will be whittled down before the new campaign gets underway.
He continued: “In terms of the other boys, we’ve got a big squad but my view is I wanted to bring them along and just work with them and get some clarity in my head and give clarity to them because I think you’ll find that a lot of them will say ‘to be honest it’s not for me, the way we’re playing and the way we’re training’, because like I say I do things differently.
“Every day we have together, every game like last night, it gives you clarity about certain things and there’s no doubt that the squad will be whittled down and there will be some more changes between now and probably the end of the transfer window.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Reading between the lines of Postecoglou’s statement, it sounds as if he was hoping that a centre-back would be one of the first signings through the door this summer. It is not ideal that we are now well into pre-season and the club have still not addressed a priority position.
