Heung-min Son believes he will return to his preferred position this season under Ange Postecoglou, after struggling to match his normal standards last time out with Antonio Conte at the helm.
Conte formations have long since relied on two attacking wing-backs who get up and down the pitch all day long, providing goals and assists from out wide.
This is all well and good, but the advancing Ivan Perisic on the left forced Heung-min Son to take up an unfamiliar role in the number 10 pocket.
The South Korean only managed 10 Premier League goals all season, compared to his 23 the year before – although that was partly down to injury too (TransferMarkt).
With Postecoglou adopting a more attacking formation with traditional wingers, Son believes he will be back to his bread and butter, taking fullbacks on one-vs-one out wide.
Heung-min Son sounds excited about next season
He said (Football London): “Everything has changed from last year. It’s too early to say if [the future is] bright or not but the lads are working really hard. That’s what pre-season is about.
“We are preparing really well, and playing a little bit different to how we used to play, different football so we are looking forward to the next season.
“You could probably see against West Ham it’s still a lot to improve and yet to change in the way we play but we want to have the ball, we want to be attacking more, play in their half, which I think is really important for us as a team and a club.
“The club has a style of playing football. You could see against West Ham it has been changed from last season.
“It’s a good thing obviously. You want to play in their half of the pitch, it’s always good, the way to score goals, it’s a shorter distance than if you have 60-70 metres in front of you. Managers are all different in the way they want to play but you have to accept what they want.
“A new manager comes and you have to quickly switch on and understand what the gaffer wants. That’s what he wants and I’m really excited to be playing attacking football because we have quality players and can score many goals and win games.”
On his position under Postecoglou, he added: “It is how I used to play, on the touchline, one-vs-one with the full-backs and creating problems for the defensive line. When I stay wide, we will have more space inside and running into the space also.
“Obviously we didn’t talk about any individual roles but you could see when I was not even playing against West Ham I could literally see what my role will be. It’s simple. Everyone in his position knows now what to do and how to manage their game.”
Spurs Web Opinion:
I think it is vitally important that forward players are played in their best positions. You see people struggle time and time again when asked to score the same number of goals from unfamiliar roles.
Son has always been a great one-vs-one attacker who cuts inside and gets you 20 goals a season, so let him do that.
