Ange Postecoglou has been speaking to the press ahead of the start of a new Premier League campaign, and when asked about Harry Kane’s failure to win a trophy at Tottenham Hotspur, the Australian defended the striker.

Any excitement around Ange Postecoglou‘s arrival in North London this summer has been largely overshadowed by the continued speculation over Harry Kane‘s future.

While the 57-year-old manager has won over the Spurs supporters with his geniality and penchant for attacking football, Postecoglou’s biggest challenge will be successfully ushering in a new era at Tottenham without the club’s all-time leading goalscorer.

Kane’s move to Bayern Munich is now considered a ‘done deal’ and Fabrizio Romano has even given the transfer his trademark ‘here we go’ stamp of approval.

Postecoglou will now be tasked with reshaping the Spurs squad’s footballing philosophy, trying to win a trophy for the first time since 2008, and doing it all without the attacking talents of Kane.

Spurs fans will mourn the loss of Harry Kane

In his latest comments to the press (via Football.London), Postecoglou was in a sentimental mood regarding Kane’s contributions to the club, and insisted that Kane’s departure will not impact his own mission for success at Spurs.

Discussing the fact Kane never won a trophy at Spurs, Postecoglou said: “I think that’s a little bit unfair on Harry as well. They’ve got close a couple of times but that’s the reality of this business that until you lift the trophy, that kind of thing is always sort of branded against you.

“That doesn’t diminish his contribution and I think it’s only fair that on a day like today that our supporters do have a sense of mourning and loss because irrespective of the lack of success at the club he has been a hero to them and he will continue to be so.

“Again him going doesn’t change my vision of what I’m trying to bring to this football club.

“It’s fairly obvious that a club of this stature has to find a way to win things. I think you can do that in many different ways.

“I have a very specific way of trying to bring success to a football club and that is playing the game a certain way and that is what I’m going to focus on and that’s all I’ve ever done in my career is to get my teams to play in a certain way because I know it brings success and that’s my challenge here as well.

“Hopefully moving forward, not just the fans but the players and everyone involved at this football club will see that the road we’ve embarked on will give us the opportunity for success because it’s all you can do.

“You can try to put yourself up here to try to be successful. Nothing is guaranteed but we want to be in a position where we can bring success to this football club.

Spurs Web Opinion

The fact Spurs never won a trophy while Harry Kane was at the club is more an indictment of the players around him and the operations at the club than a mark against his own talents.

We would have been a lot further away from winning something if we had not had Kane scoring the goals he has. It’s not ideal, but hopefully, we will now get to see Kane lifting a trophy in the near future, even if it’s not in a Tottenham shirt.
