Ange Postecoglou believes that there are two sides to the coin when talking about Harry Kane’s Tottenham exit, and you can either see it as a problem or an opportunity.
A multiple Premier League Golden Boot winner, a World Cup Golden Boot winner, the club’s all-time top scorer, and England’s leading all-time goalscorer, losing Harry Kane to Bayern Munich was always going to be a blow to Spurs.
However, while Postecoglou admits it could be seen as an impediment, it is also an opportunity – a chance for other players to take charge and for Tottenham to build something new.
The new Spurs boss admitted he wanted to give the supporters some hope and belief in the team more than anything today, and is confident the players did that throughout the 2-2 draw with Brentford.
Postecoglou was particularly impressed with Yves Bissouma in midfield, who ran the show for the away side at times, linking up superbly with James Maddison.
He said (BBC at 16:34): “Considering the events of the day I thought we handled ourselves pretty well. In terms of effort I couldn’t ask any more. We got a great start to the game and then had to take Romero off.
“I thought we reacted well to that. But conceding the two goals, it would be easy to drop out heads but I don’t think we did that.
“We worked our way back in, scored and controlled the second half for the most part. We could maybe have been more creative in the final third to create some more opportunities.
“Bissouma has been outstanding through pre-season and was superb today. We had a lot of the ball and it was important we kept things ticking over.
“Our progression of the ball was really good, we just lacked a cutting edge. It is the stage we are at. We are trying to change the way the team plays and they are taking on a lot of information.
“It is either an impediment to you or an opportunity. Harry Kane was a massive figure for this club for a long time and will continue to be whether he is in the building or not. We wanted to go out and give our supporters some hope and belief in the team. I thought they did that today.”
He added: “Pleased with the effort considering everything that was going on out there, we acquitted ourselves well.
“Obviously 2-1 down, penalty, own goal, you can feel sorry for yourself but the lads handled it really well, we controlled the game for the most part, we were probably weren’t as much of a threat in the final third as we would like to be but it’s a difficult place to come and we can’t fault the effort.
Spurs Web Opinion:
The players did the fans proud today. You can already see the brave attacking intent from a Postecoglou side, and that will only improve as they learn the system more and more. With four debutants in the side as well, a draw away to Brentford is a great result.
