James Maddison is Tottenham Hotspur’s new number 10, and the midfielder insists he relishes the pressure and responsibility of taking on the shirt number from Harry Kane.
After months of speculation, Harry Kane has left Tottenham. The talismanic striker finally sealed a move to German giants Bayern Munich this weekend, in a deal thought to be worth over £100m (Sky Sports).
Kane leaves behind a great legacy, having become Tottenham’s all-time leading goalscorer earlier this year (GOAL).
Replacing the 30-year-old will be no mean feat, but Ange Postecoglou has an array of attacking talent to choose from already, and could well add more players to his roster before the transfer window closes.
One such player the Australian will be able to depend upon this season is James Maddison.
A new signing in North London this summer, Maddison comes with a wealth of Premier League experience, and has already won over the Spurs faithful with two assists on his competitive debut against Brentford on Sunday afternoon.
James Maddison loves the number 10 shirt
Taking over the mantle of Tottenham’s new number 10 does come with a certain weight of expectation for Maddison, but it is not something he is shying away from.
Quite the opposite, in fact, as the 26-year-old revealed how happy he is to have the new shirt number in an interview with Match of the Day.
When asked about taking over Harry Kane’s shirt, Maddison joked: “It’s not that big, this is only a small.”

The England international then added: “When we found out Harry was leaving the club, the club said ‘It’s free if you want it.’ I want that responsibility. I want that pressure. I love the number 10 as well, it’s such an iconic number.
“To follow in Harry’s footsteps, probably the greatest player to ever play for Tottenham, it’s an honour, and I will try to wear it with pride.”
Spurs Web Opinion
James Maddison was brilliant against Brentford and has already shown how much of a big player he will be for Spurs. We may have just lost a truly outstanding number 10, but we have very quickly gained another.
