Journalist Sjourd Mossou has said that former Tottenham winger Steven Bergwijn has now fallen off considerably, describing the Ajax star as ‘a sack of potatoes’.
There was some disappointment among sections of the Spurs fan base when Bergwijn left the club in the summer of 2022 as there was a feeling that the Dutchman had not got as many opportunities as he deserved, particularly under Antonio Conte.
The 26-year-old had an impressive start to life at the Johan Cruyff Arena and it seemed like the €31.25m (£26.8m) fee that Ajax paid for him was well worth it but his form tailed off towards the end of last season.
Steven Bergwijn continues to struggle at Ajax
The Netherlands international has been in and out of the starting eleven so far this campaign, having found the back of the net four times in 10 appearances across all competitions (Transfermarkt).
Dutch journalist Valentijn Driessen suggested a couple of weeks ago that Ajax could look to offload the former Spurs man to Saudi Arabia when the transfer window opens in January (Voetbal Zone).
The Eredivisie giants have had a disastrous start to the season, currently languishing in 17th place, and Mossou has expressed astonishment by the decision of the club’s caretaker coach Hedwiges Maduro to hand Bergwijn the armband.
He told Voetbal Zone (as translated by Sport Witness): “Everyone agrees that Bergwijn should not be captain. Perhaps it was a clever trick to motivate him and there was hope that the penny would drop.
“He has become a burden, a sack of potatoes on the back. I don’t think Josip Sutalo is great either, but he is a more logical captain than Bergwijn. It is unimaginable how he has sunk. Certainly, for a player worth thirty million euros. That has been a very long time, very painful.”
Spurs Web Opinion
While Bergwijn has dropped off considerably as a player over the last 12 months, it is unfair to blame him for Ajax’s current predicament. It is difficult for any attacking player to perform in a side who are struggling to get the ball forward and create chances.
