David Ornstein says Tottenham do not have much money to spend in January, having spent the bulk of the Harry Kane fee prior to the striker’s sale in the summer.
There has been a lot said and written about Tottenham’s January plans over the last couple of weeks, with various reports indicating that signing a centre-back and a defensive midfielder is at the top of the club’s agenda (Football Insider).
There has particularly been a lot of reportage about the Lilywhites’ pursuit of a centre-half, with the likes of Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly, Chelsea’s Trevor Chalobah and Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi thought to be among the names on the North London club’s wishlist (GiveMeSport).
More recently, there have also been suggestions that Spurs will look to strengthen their wide areas after the injuries to Manor Solomon and Ivan Perisic (Tribal Football).
Meanwhile, some outlets have also talked up the chances of Tottenham moving for a centre-forward, with Brentford’s Ivan Toney (Express) and Feyenoord’s Santiago Gimenez (Mirror) mooted as targets.
Tottenham don’t have large January funds
However, Ornstein has now indicated that Tottenham are not expected to be too busy and splash a lot of cash in the winter transfer window.
The journalist said on a Q&A on The Athletic: “As far as I know, there isn’t much money at all for this winter. Spurs knew Kane was likely to leave and spent much of the money they would end up receiving for him in advance. Then some after, too, at both senior and youth level.
“So they will need to be creative and I’m sure they have targets… whether they arrive in January, the summer or at all let’s see. There were players they wanted to shift in the summer to create space for new faces, only to see them stay put. I think they may have wanted another centre-back so that’s one to watch and could be even more pressing if Van de Ven is ruled out for a prolonged period.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I have no doubt that Tottenham will sign a central defender in January and I also believe that the club will only let Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg leave if they can replace him, which was evidently their plan in the summer as well.
