Paul Robinson has said that he expects rumoured Tottenham target Kalvin Phillips to join Newcastle United in January as the move makes ‘complete sense’ for all the parties.
It has been widely reported over the last month and a half that Phillips is expected to leave Manchester City in search of regular game time ahead of next summer’s European Championship.
This includes an update by Football Transfers, who stated last month that Spurs are keeping an eye on the 27-year-old’s situation and that the North London club are ‘really keen’ on winning the race for his signature.
However, the Lilywhites are expected to face competition from Newcastle, who have also allegedly identified Phillips as the man to bolster their midfield (TEAMtalk).
Tottenham are also expected to face competition from Italy for the Man City star, with The Sun claiming on Friday that Juventus are confident of winning the race for the England international’s signature.
Should Tottenham move for Kalvin Phillips?
Robinson believes that a move to St James Park would make the most sense for Phillips following the suspension of Sandro Tonali.
When asked about Newcastle’s move for the midfielder, the former Tottenham number one told Football Insider: “It makes absolute and complete sense for both clubs. Pep Guardiola already said that Kalvin could have gone out on loan, but he chose to stay and he still hasn’t got enough minutes.
“He’s had more minutes in an international shirt. For Newcastle, with Tonali being out, they need a direct replacement and a bigger squad for the Champions League.
“We’ve seen them struggle recently with injuries, but they’ve still got the results. It was a disappointing loss to Dortmund, but I saw at Wolves that the application was outstanding.
“But I think squad depth is going to be apparent. They paid a lot for Tonali because they needed that type of player, so nothing’s changed between the start of the season and now. Kalvin Phillips fits the bill, get it done now.”
Spurs Web Opinion
If Phillips’ priority is to get game time ahead of Euro 2024, I am not sure he would be overly keen on a move to Spurs as he is not guaranteed to start every game at N17.
I do not expect Ange to give the 27-year-old any assurances over game time, which is why the midfielder might lean towards a switch to Juve or Newcastle.
