Apparently, Tottenham Hotspur sent scouts to watch Sporting Lisbon against Benfica at the weekend, with a view to keeping tabs on both Marcus Edwards and Pedro Goncalves.
Ange Postecoglou may have already transformed the Spurs squad and got them aligned with his methods rather quickly, but there is still a lot of work to be done before he has the squad he wants and needs to bring success to the club.
With injuries to key players exposing just how thin the squad is, it’s no surprise that Spurs are expected to make moves in the January transfer window.
One player already strongly linked with a move to North London, is someone who knows all about Tottenham Hotspur – Marcus Edwards. The Sporting winger came through the Tottenham academy before heading out to Portugal, and it has long been suggested he might return.
Just last week, it was claimed both Chelsea and Spurs were keen on the 24-year-old, but it is thought the latter hold the upper hand in the race due to their previous connections with Edwards (Correio da Manhã).
Spurs scouting Sporting duo Edwards and Goncalves
Now, a report from 90Min suggests Spurs are doing their homework on Edwards, and his Sporting teammate, midfielder Pedro Goncalves.
Tottenham “representatives” were known to be at the recent clash between Benfica and Sporting, tasked with “keeping an eye” on both Edwards and Goncalves.
It is said Spurs and Sporting are on “good terms” after the recent business to send Pedro Porro to North London.
Whether that will allow them to secure a deal to bring Edwards back, and bring his “versatile” teammate, Goncalves, with him in January, remains to be seen.
Spurs Web Opinion
There’s very little meat to this report, but the fact we are sending people to watch these two is definitely a step in the right direction.
They would both be great signings, and I’d be very interested to see what kind of deal we can strike given the sell-on clause for Edwards, and our positive relationship with Sporting.
