Japhet Tanganga has finally got some minutes under his belt for Augsburg, albeit it in a behind-closed-doors friendly during the international break.
The last few years in North London haven’t exactly gone to plan for Tanganga, with injuries hampering his progress and the young defender failing to force his way into the first-team plans under Antonio Conte.
The arrival of Ange Postecoglou this summer did little to alter Tanganga’s squad status at Spurs. Despite the chance to impress his new manager, it was ultimately decided that the 24-year-old would leave on loan.
Tanganga is spending the season with German side, Augsburg, but has endured a ‘nightmare’ start to life in the Bundesliga. The Spurs man arrived at his new club with a knee injury and has been unable to play thus far.
He was named in the matchday squad for the penultimate game before the international break, but was an unused substitute there. Then, Tanganga was absent entirely for the most recent match, a draw against Hoffenheim.
Tanganga starts for Augsburg behind-closed-doors
However, things are looking up. With Augsburg only losing five players to the international break, the club decided to play a friendly against third-tier club, SSV Jahn Regensburg, and Tanganga started the game.
According to a report from Football.London, Tanganga got some “much-needed minutes” under his belt and it is thought the experience will have “done him the world of good.”
Tanganga was selected to start the game by boss Jess Thorup, and played the whole first half before being replaced. His side won the game 5-2.
Now, Tanganga will be hoping he is in a “good position” to be in the squad for the game against Union Berlin this weekend. After a “frustrating start,” it’s expected Tanganga will look to prove his worth now.
Spurs Web Opinion
Great news for Japhet, and hopefully this is the start of his comeback. If he can get a decent run in the team, I’ve no doubt he will excel in Germany and seal a permanent switch.
