Mundo Deportivo have claimed that Barcelona have set their sights on Tottenham midfielder Giovani Lo Celso after they learned that Gavi would be sidelined for a significant amount of time with a knee injury.
The report states that the La Liga giants are expected to dip into the market for a midfielder in January to make up for Gavi’s loss, with Xavi viewing that as a ‘priority’ position to address.
It is explained that Lo Celso ‘perfectly fits’ the profile that Barca are looking for, given his ability to play between the lines and his quality in the final third.
Furthermore, the Spurs star has plenty of experience in the Spanish top flight, which is why he is seen by many as a ‘fantastic alternative’ to Gavi.
Barcelona rekindle interest in Giovani Lo Celso
The report states Barca tried to sign Lo Celso last summer but Ange Postecoglou blocked the transfer and made the player feel ‘important’.
However, the outlet points out that since the 27-year-old has only made four appearances this season, a January move could be on the cards.
Finally, the publication adds that the Catalan giants would ideally prefer to sign Lo Celso on loan, given their issues in meeting the FFP requirements.
Spurs Web Opinion
I expect Lo Celso to get plenty of minutes over the next month and a half, now that Maddison is out injured. I would be quite surprised if Spurs let the Argentine leave in January without bringing another attacking midfielder through the door.
