Ben Davies has said that he is enjoying the challenge of playing as a centre-back in a back four in Ange Postecoglou’s system.
While Davies is a left-back by trade, he is not a stranger to playing as a left-sided centre-back in a back three, having done so under Antonio Conte and for the Welsh national side for several years.
However, due to Tottneham’s injury crisis, the 30-year-old has had to partner Emerson Royal in central defence in recent matches, and the former Swansea man has hardly put a foot wrong in the unfamiliar role.
When asked about the challenge of operating in his new role, Davies told Football.London: “I’m enjoying it. I think the results haven’t been exactly what we wanted since I’ve come in but we have been there or thereabouts.
“It’s enjoyable. We get a lot of the ball, and you’re expected to defend one-on-one in big spaces at times but I don’t think when you look at the goals we’ve conceded that has been our issue.”
Ben Davies is happy to have Cristian Romero back
Davies’ job could potentially become much easier as he is now expected to partner Cristian Romero, who is available for selection for the clash against West Ham after serving his three-game suspension.
The Welshman admitted that having the Argentine back would be a big boost, revealing that the 25-year-old has looked quite sharp in training.
When asked about Romero’s return, he said: “I think he’s obviously a top, top player and when players like him are fit they need to be involved. It’ll definitely a big boost for us to have him playing.
“The reality is he has been training well and that’s where I see him the most is on the training pitch. He’s conducted himself well. He hasn’t been able to play so he has been helping the boys in every way he can. I think he’ll be ready to go.”
Romero is expected to come into the team in place of Emerson, who had some shaky moments against Manchester City, but Davies insisted that the Brazilian handled himself well under the circumstances.
When asked about Emerson, he responded: “I think he’s stepped in and done well for us. It’s tough. We’ve played four traditional full-backs I guess in those situations but things are in a case of needs must. We’re working hard.
“Against Man City] Emerson had a lot of the ball, he was brave, he kept trying to play out even though at times it was difficult but I thought overall he handled himself very well.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Every club needs a player like Davies, who is fiercely loyal and professional, and reliably puts in a 7 out of 10 performance every time he plays, irrespective of whether it is at left-back, left wing-back or centre-back.
The 30-year-old is very much a team-man, who does not complain or sulk at being left out of the side. The former Swansea man deserves a lot more respect than he gets from sections of the Spurs fan base.
