The Times reporter Tom Allnutt says he does not believe Ange Postecoglou sees Emerson Royal as a long-term option.
While Pedro Porro has established himself as the undisputed first-choice at right-back ahead of Emerson, the Brazilian has deputised as a centre-back over the last two matches due to Tottenham’s injury crises.
The former Real Betis man did have some nervy moments in central defence, particularly against Manchester City, but he did an adequate job, considering he was playing out of position.
However, a report from Inter Live suggested a couple of days ago that the right-back’s days at Tottenham could be numbered, with the outlet claiming that the Lilywhites could use the player as a makeweight in a deal to sign Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan.
The report further added that Emerson is also in the sights of Real Madrid but it was explained that Los Blancos are only willing to offer €20m (£17m) for the 24-year-old while Spurs value the player at around €35m (£30m).
Emerson Royal is not a long-term option for Spurs
Allnutt has opined that Postecoglou sees Emerson as a temporary option rather than someone who fits into his plans over the long term.
The journalist said on The Tottenham Way podcast: “It’s easy to dismiss all the injuries they’ve got and you’re right, Emerson is playing out of position.
“There are times when Emerson does look quite uncomfortable but it’s to be expected, it’s just not his position. He, for me, doesn’t seem like someone who is here for the long-term under Postecoglou, unless he’s happy to be a back-up.”

Tottenham will likely look to replace Emerson next summer and the right-back himself might want to leave in search of regular game time. With Postecoglou not appearing to rate Djed Spence, one would expect Spurs to enter the market for another young right-back at the end of this season.
