Paul Merson is confident that Tottenham Hotspur will be able to emerge victorious against Newcastle United, predicting a 2-1 scoreline in Spurs’ favour.
Spurs are coming into this weekend with four losses and one draw in their last five games in the Premier League and all the excitement built up from the initial start to the season has quickly dissipated.
A loss against the Magpies could prove to be catastrophic for Spurs and Ange Postecoglou will be looking to find a way to arrest the slump. Injuries and suspensions have certainly not helped Tottenham’s cause but they need to find a way to win despite these hurdles.
Spurs came into the weekend level on points with Manchester United, who many consider to have had a disastrous start to the season. A loss against Newcastle could push the Lilywhites even further down the table and Spurs will be keen to avoid that.
Merson believes Spurs will edge the Newcastle clash
Merson backs Ange’s Spurs to show up and get the job done against Newcastle United. The Arsenal legend, speaking to SportsKeeda predicts the game to end 2-1 in Tottenham’s favour.
He said: “Much like the previous game, this is a hard one to call as it depends on what happens between West Ham and Tottenham. That said, I just have a feeling Ange Postecoglou’s side will nick this one.
“Newcastle have been outstanding so far, but most of their players are playing out of their skins, so I think things will catch up with them sooner or later.
“The Magpies have a UEFA Champions League clash against AC Milan coming up too, so they’ll have one eye on that game as they are still in with a chance of making it through to the knockout stages.
“They don’t have their destiny in their own hands, so they’ll have to secure a win against the Serie A giants and hope Borussia Dortmund do them a favour against Paris Saint-Germain, so it’ll be an interesting one to keep an eye out for.”
“Spurs are on a bit of a bad run, but something tells me they’ll show up and record a narrow 2-1 win.”
Spurs Web Opinion
We have been at the receiving end of quite a few 2-1 scorelines of late, losing by that exact margin against Wolves, Aston Villa and West Ham. For a change, could we inflict the same on our opposition, as Merson predicts?
In other seasons, five results like these would have sent the Spurs hierarchy into overdrive and caused panic amongst the players. However, there seems to be trust in Ange despite the results. Let’s hope Ange has a plan in mind to get us out of this slump and get us back to winning ways, starting with the game against Newcastle.
