Ange Postecoglou has been asked his thoughts on Cristian Romero’s challenge on Callum Wilson in the game against Newcastle United last weekend, and it seems the Spurs boss didn’t feel the incident warranted much discussion.
Tottenham got back to winning ways finally on Sunday evening with a comfortable 4-1 win over Newcastle United. Destiny Udogie bagged his first goal for the Lilywhites, Richarlison netted two valuable goals, and Heung-min Son converted a penalty to complete the rout.
Not even a late consolation goal from Joelinton could spoil the party for Spurs, who were coming off the back of five games without a victory.
It appeared Tottenham had finally recaptured their best form, after a spate of injuries and suspensions had ravaged the squad and left Ange Postecolou‘s side exposed.
Postecoglou not concerned with Romero challenge
The return of Cristian Romero – suspended for three games after a red card against Chelsea at the start of last month – has been a much-needed boost. The combative centre-half has contributed a goal since his return and brought some stability to the backline.
But, he could have found himself suspended once more after putting in a fairly reckless and potentially dangerous challenge on Newcastle striker Callum Wilson.
Many have criticised Romero for the incident, but Postecoglou is not about to join that club. Speaking to the press (via Football.London), he said: “To an extent but it’s fair to say the spotlight will be on him for the rest of the year. Any challenge he does whether it’s something that’s pretty clear like the Chelsea game or last week which I thought was as much clumsy as anything else.
“And he knows that, he understands that. He’s just got to make the adjustments that he needs to do during the game. But I don’t think it’s a subject for long chats. It’s pretty evident the impact he has on us when he’s playing and when he’s not, and we much prefer to have him out there.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I think Romero’s challenge was right on the cusp of being a red, if I’m honest. We don’t want him to lose his edge and hold back any of that aggression that makes him such a top-class defender, but he really cannot afford to get sent off again this season.
