Journalist Paul Brown has said that he has not been surprised by the way Son Heung-min has stepped up since Harry Kane’s departure in the summer, revealing that the forward once told him that he wants to win the Ballon d’Or.
Much like most of the Tottenham squad, Son had a campaign to forget last term, with the forward later revealing that he was playing through pain for most of the campaign (Daily Mail).
The Lilywhites desperately needed the 31-year-old to step up and deliver goals consistently following their record goalscorer’s move to Bayern Munich, and he has done just that, having found the back of the net 10 times to go with his four assists this season (Transferrmarkt).
The forward has also been visibly more vocal since being handed the captain’s armband by Ange Postecoglou, seemingly relishing the leadership responsibility.
Brown insisted that he is far from surprised by how Son has stepped up, revealing that the South Korean harbours major ambitions.
Heung-min Son has an eye on the Ballon d’Or
When asked about the forward’s exploits this season, the journalist told GiveMeSport: “I’m not surprised really. I think he’s still doing exactly what he was when Kane was there, but he’s been given more responsibility with the captain’s armband and he’s thrived on that.
“I think he’s someone who was always likely to be very well respected in the dressing room at Spurs and he’s really driven and ambitious.
“I know that personally because he once told me in an interview that he wanted to win the Ballon d’Or one day.
“He’s also a happy, smiley character around the place who just helps bring positivity and I think the people around him appreciate that. So I’m not surprised that he’s thriving in this role.”

One can see that Son has the respect of his Tottenham teammates, not only because of his world-class quality but also because of his humility and his willingness to work his socks off for the team. The Spurs dressing room appears to be quite a happy place at the moment.
